With the winds HOWLing and the temperatures down in the 40’s for most the day, we decided to not do a bikeride this weekend. After some discussion we made up our minds. Cookie Cabin.
Cookie Cabin is a famous store/restaurant in Summerhaven, at the top of Mout Lemmon famous for their giant cookies. These cookies are the size of a 10″ plate and come in 6 styles (Chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, brownie, snickerdoodle, and the Rachel (oat, coconut and ) or you can get all 6 of these in a sampler.
This is not the first time we have been to Summerhaven to get cookies. Last time I convinced Shanin that we should take the back way up the mountain on ‘unimproved roads’ that require high clearance. Well, it ended kup taking much longer to drive all the way to the other side of the mountain and then climb up a very rough road that we needed 4×4 low on mu ch of the top. We arrived at 4:45, but the line was too long and we got turned away before getting inside.
This time we were going to make it.
Unless everyone else from Tucson and Sonora Mexico decided against that. See, they don’t see a lot of snow here in southern Arizona. And since this was the first weekend of the year with snow up on the mountain, everyone and their dog decided to go to Mt Lemmon. What should have been about a 40 minute drive turned into 100 minutes of crawling slowly up hill. Now don’t get me wrong. The view was fantastic. But we wanted our cookies! Summerhaven was a parking lot. It took us 20 minutes to go 2 blocks.
We finally found a parking spot outside of town and walked to The Cookie Cabin. Not much of a line, great! Wrong. Even though the line was not long (30 people in front of us) it took 45 minutes to be able to order our Sampler. It only took 12 minutes to eat it. Slowly.
Then it was time to tackle the ride home.
Remember all those people who were up on the mountain? They also all wanted to leave it when we did. This meant another hour and 20 minute drive back home. But the view over Tucson valley and the purple Tucson mountains out west were worth it.
Was it worth 4 hours to get a cookie? All I know is it was a great ride up and down if slow and a cookie was a nice treat.
